SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol employed to connect to a web server and carry out various tasks through a command line. The protocol is popular with many knowledgeable users, since the info transmitted over it is encrypted, so it cannot be intercepted on the way by a 3rd party. SSH access can be used for a number of things depending on the type of hosting account. With a shared hosting account, in particular, SSH is one of several ways to import/export a database or to upload a file if the web server allows for it. In case you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH can be used for pretty much everything - you can install software or restart particular services like the web server or the database server which run on the machine. SSH is employed mostly with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients which permit you to use the protocol if your PC is using a different Operating System too. The connection is made on TCP port 22 by default and the remote server always listens for incoming connections on that port although lots of providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Hosting

SSH access is available with all Linux hosting which we offer you. With some of them, it's provided by default, while with others it is an additional upgrade which you can add with several mouse clicks from your web hosting CP. You can get SSH access from the section dedicated to it where you will also find the details which you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You may choose the password which you shall use and, if required, you will be able to modify it with a few clicks from the same place. All commands which could be used with our shared packages are listed within a help article along with relevant examples. If the SSH access function is enabled for your account, you will also be able to upload files using your preferred FTP client via an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Servers

SSH access is offered as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server solutions, while with others you could include it via the hosting CP if needed - even just for the current month. In any case, you can activate and de-activate the function with only one click via the SSH section of the Control Panel. In the same spot, you'll discover the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You'll also find a box where you may input the password which you want to use, because it doesn't have to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better protection, you can also change it as frequently as you want. The full list of the commands which can be performed in a semi-dedicated account is available in our Knowledge Base, along with the syntax and a couple of instances. An extra function after SSH access is enabled shall be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP using any FTP client which supports this kind of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Servers

The VPS server plans which we offer include SSH access by default, not as a paid upgrade or a feature which you should enable. Once your new server is ready, you'll be able to connect and begin working on your content using the login details which you have entered during the order process. A copy of the SSH credentials shall be sent to you via email too. Because your VPS will be isolated from the other ones on the physical web server, there are no limitations regarding what you can or can't do via SSH. You'll be able to download, install and manage any piece of software which will run on a Linux web server, reboot the entire server or only a certain software component, and work with files, folders and databases without restrictions. All you'll require for that is a console or an SSH client on your end.
